Report Templates; Grouping custom Data Table gives "Argument 'Length' must be greater or equal to zero" error

If a Report Template Script produces a Data Table and any of the fields in that Data Table have a length less than two characters, applying any groupings when running the report may result in the following error:

Argument 'Length' must be greater or equal to zero.
