Mandatory fields; entering just a space in a mandatory field may have allowed the record to be saved

Entering a space in a mandatory field may have allowed the record to be saved leaving a blank value in a mandatory field.

For example, add a new Department; enter anything in the code and then a space in the description. The record saves, but the description would be blank.
